Are management appliances worth exploring? That’s the question we ask this week, and it’s one that should be on your mind. Appliances counter conventional wisdom, which says you manage your systems and networks with expensive software that runs on general-purpose hardware. Appliances can be a lot less expensive and have the concept of simplicity going for them – just drop it in your network and let it do its management thing. But do you give up too much for the simplicity and low price?

MCI finds a buyer for wireless assets
Nextel is buying MCI’s fixed wireless service assets for $144 million. MCI, formerly WorldCom, Monday filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York that states that wireless service provider Nextel was the top bidder in an auction to sell off MCI’s wireless assets.

PeopleSoft board urges shareholders to reject Oracle
In an open letter to PeopleSoft shareholders released Tuesday, the company’s board of directors reaffirmed their opposition to Oracle’s proposed hostile takeover of the company, warning that Oracle’s plan “poses extraordinary risks.”
