* SMC updates 10/100 switch, releases stackable version
SMC continues to roll out LAN switches aimed at small companies, with a stackable 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet switch announced in last week and an update to the standalone version unveiled this week.
The switches continue the industry trend of providing good amounts of bandwidth at low prices – the stackable switch costs $25 per port, while the standalone switch is under $17 per port.
The stackable is called the TigerStack III 10/100 Managed Switch, and it has 24 ports of 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet and two option slots for fiber and Gigabit Ethernet ports. A redundant power supply is optional as well. The backplane has the capacity to move 9.6G bit/sec, so there is plenty of headroom.
The switch has some security built in, like support for RADIUS authentication, SSH for secure telnet sessions, Secure Sockets Layer and virtual LANs. It also supports quality-of-service control, rate limiting, RMON and Fast Spanning Tree. SMC promises support for SNMPv2 in the future.
Up to eight of the switches can be stacked, for up to 192 ports managed under one IP address. Available this month, the switch lists for $600.
The TigerSwitch 10/100 24-Port Standalone Managed Layer 2 Switch is the standalone version, shipping now for $400. It has the same port configuration as the stackable, and has been updated with security and management features, like support for RADIUS and IEEE 802.1x authentication, and quality-of-service controls.
