* Red Hat debuts small server, workstation software
Red Hat last week introduced updates to its enterprise server and workstation operating system products with the release of Red Hat Enterprise ES and Red Hat Enterprise WS.
Red Hat Enterprise ES is being billed as a smaller sibling to Red Hat Enterprise AS – formerly called Red Hat Linux Advanced Server. The ES product is aimed at departmental Linux server jobs, such as file, print and e-mail serving. The server is also suitable for deploying as a node in a high-performance computing cluster for scientific research applications.
Since the product is targeted at smaller servers, the software does not support larger hardware configurations – more than two X86-based CPUs and 4G bytes of memory. Also, high availability (HA) configurations are not available on the platform (Red Hat Enterprise AS supports HA more CPUs and memory)
The new server product includes a one-year subscription to Red Hat Network, a service for receiving automated patch updates and security notifications. The server also comes with business-hours telephone support.
The new WS product is targeted as a high-performance workstation operating system for such end users as applications developers, graphics professionals or CAD engineers. The WS software is similar to the ES server product, but does not include features such as DNS or DHCP servers. Red Hat Enterprise WS can run on either dual-X86 or Itanium 2 processors. The workstation software comes with the same support and Red Hat Network offering as the server application.
Red Hat Enterprise ES and Red Hat Enterprise WS are available now starting at $800 for the server platform and $300 for the workstation software.
