* Cisco recently announced it has issued a half million certifications worldwide

I knew there were a lot of you out there with Cisco certification, but I didn’t know just how many. Cisco announced last week that it reached the half million mark of certifications issued worldwide as of March.

The Cisco Career Certifications Program includes the popular Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), both of which continue to grow. And Cisco has also seen a big increase in demand for technology-specific certifications such as security and IP telephony.

“One of the biggest Cisco sales drivers is its enormously successful certifications program,” says Zeus Kerravala, vice president of enterprise hardware and software for Yankee Group. “Employers have confidence that their Cisco certified employees have the training and expertise required to successfully design, implement and maintain networks.”

The vendor offers three levels of general certification, from associate to professional to expert, which represents the highest level of achievement available in various tracks. Cisco also offers a variety of Cisco Qualified Specialist- focused certifications to demonstrate knowledge and skills in specific technologies, products or job roles.

“The continuing growth and adoption of Cisco Career Certifications, particularly in security and IP telephony, is evidence of Cisco’s preeminence in the networking industry and increasing confidence in the competence of certified professionals,” says Tom Kelly, vice president of Cisco’s Internet Learning Solutions Group. “For employers and network professionals alike, Cisco certifications are badges of expertise, aptitude and hands-on capability that is unparalleled in the industry.”
