Web sites are taking the hint. Customers want someone to talk to when they have questions about their online transaction. This means that more and more voice is being introduced into the world of e-commerce.
E-tailers are installing voice over IP (VoIP) systems to the back-end that enables them to switch easily between multiple call centers. They are also deploying a mixed voice/data platform so that they can integrate automated voice response systems with live call environments.
This proves that we are beyond the basics in VoIP. It is no longer a question of whether you’re going to roll out VoIP. The question has become: Are you doing enough with your rollout?
In June, Network World launches our Technology Tour “Voice over IP: Maximizing the Impact of Your Rollout.” I’ll be joined on the road by Johna Till Johnson, Network World columnist and founder of Nemertes Research.
Johna has spent the past few months interviewing IT managers in large corporations that oversee their company’s IP telephony projects. She is asking them details about their successes in deploying voice across the data network. She’s also asking them to unveil some of the obstacles they continue to face.
Included in this study are e-commerce companies that have taken on the challenge of mixing voice with their Web environments. She’ll unveil the results of these conversations during the tour.
