Is it just me, or is it that whenever Bill Gates gives a speech about how secure the software his company makes is, there’s inevitably a major security breech in Microsoft software within 24 hours?
Chief Software Architect Bill Gates barely finished touting the latest security packages and other data center-oriented plans at the WinHEC show when word came that the company had to shut down its Passport single sign-on authentication system. It had to be shutdown because of a flaw that would let attackers change an account password if they knew the user name.
While it appears the vulnerability has not been seriously exploited, it could pose a large security threat to Passport users who store critical personal information such as credit card information with the service to access various online sites and services without having to retype information. Microsoft said it had already fixed the flaw, but said it had affected a small portion its active 200 million Passport customers.
