Where can we find some inexpensive products that can monitor bandwidth and conduct MIS reporting about applications used by each IP address over the WAN?

The Multi Router Traffic Grapher is an open source tool for monitoring the traffic load on network links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing graphical images to provide a live visual representation of this traffic. Here is an example.

MRTG is based on Perl and C and works under Unix and Windows NT. MRTG is in widespread use across the Internet.

Snort is a strong open source network intrusion-detection system, capable of performing real-time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP networks. It can perform protocol analysis, content searching/matching and can be used to detect a variety of attacks and probes, such as buffer overflows, stealth port scans, common gateway interface attacks, SMB probes and more.

It includes real-time alerting, incorporates alerting mechanisms for syslog, a user specified file, a Unix socket or WinPopup messages via smbclient.

Another tool, called Argus, is available for Unix at www.qosient.com/argus/.
