Cisco is aiming to drum up interest again in municipal wireless. In a speech delivered at the 2008 Government Technologies Conference and Expo in Toronto later this month, Geoff Cargill, Cisco business development manager, public sector – government and education will ask if muni Wi-Fi has really failed or whether it’s just in transition. According to the PR puff promoting Cargill’s session, muni Wi-Fi is undergoing an “evolution that is necessary to address the underlying problems that were encountered in some of the first generation of outdoor wireless network deployments.” By some accounts, the high cost of muni Wi-Fi to the vendors involved was a major inhibitor. What makes Cargill think that can be address in an “evolution”?
