If you haven’t seen it already, there’s an interesting discussion going on at the Brad Reese on Cisco blog questioning whether Cisco is suffering from the skills shortage it says it is – a shortage that it hopes to alleviate by bringing in H-1Bs. Cisco, which has 1,504 U.S. job openings wants to fill many of the vacancies with new hires from far away lands. But a during a presentation at this week’s Partner Summit, Celia Harper Guerra, Cisco director of Worldwide Partner Talent said Cisco is showered with 20,000 resumes a month (i.e., 240,000 a year). On top of that, Cisco has 200,000 active registered graduates of the Cisco Networking Academy that are now part of the Cisco Career Connections Web site, Brad points out. So why is Cisco saying there’s a skills shortage? Or perhaps this says little (or a lot) about the skills level of folks who apply for jobs at Cisco?
