Microsoft is pushing out Hyper-V as an optional update via Windows Update, according to the Windows Virtualization Team Blog. One known bug involves the HP Network Configuration Utility. The blog also says that optional updates are not installed automatically by default. So, to install it, first open the Windows Update control panel and click “View available updates” under the “Install Updates” button. Then check the Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB950049) and click install.
It may be possible that you don’t see the updated listed. If so, the blog says you may need to click the “Check for Updates” or “Check online for updates from Windows Update.” It is also possible that Windows Update servers will get slammed and won’t immediately be able to push out the update to everyone right away.
Now if you are a user of the HP Network Configuration Utility, you could have bigger problems. You should refer to support note KB950792. Basically, users of that utility can experience problems with loading Hyper-V — the update will hang, never install and its not a pretty picture to repair the computer to fix the problem. If you use the HP Network Configuration Utility, do yourself a favor and turn it off before installing Hyper-V via Windows Update.
