Everyone knows that Microsot and Citrix are partners and that Citrix will be doing something to extend Hyper-V. Exactly what that “something” is has not yet been announced by Citrix although Citrix execs have promised that they will spill the beans when Hyper-V ships. Simon Crosby, the CTO of the Virtualization and Management Division at Citrix, says he’s eager for Hyper-V to ship already, according to a story from IDG News Service. Citrix will likely run some of its wares on top of Microsoft’s Hyper-V such as the recently launched XenDesktop. Crosby also said that a sizeable market can be had by running Windows on appliances via hypervisors.
On the other hand, Citrix owns a competing, though Hyper-V compatible, hypervisor of its own, XenServer. (Crosby was one of the founders of XenSource.) XenServer has a lot of steam in the market as a competition to VMware. The underlying open source Xen platform has been the choice of Sun, Red Hat, Oracle and Novell and Crosby says that Hyper-V also “shares the same architecture” — even though he is equally quick to point out that Hyper-V is entirely a Microsoft creation.
Citrix will somehow extend Hyper-V — that much is known. What the form of that extension will be (management products? new features?), mums the official word for now.
