How to recycle end-of-life Cisco PIX gear

Here’s a marketing play for security appliances taken from the playbook of household appliance makers. When you buy a new washer/dryer or fridge, the retailer

will often offer to haul away the old one for free if you pay the retailer for the delivery/installation service on the new one. Well, security vendor Astaro is pretty much doing the same thing in reverse, reports ChannelWeb. Astaro is urging users not to toss end-of-lifecycle PIX appliances into the landfill. Intead it is promising them that if they swap the old box out for a new Astaro box, Astaro will have the old gear recycled. Through a partnership with Go Green Global Recycling, Astaro will offer users of Cisco Systems’ PIX appliance a 20 percent discount on Astaro Security Gateway appliances in exchange for their PIX units. Go Green will then recycle those cast-off PIX boxes.

The promotion is highlighting the fact that Cisco has announced plans to retire the PIX platform as of July 28, with accessories to be available for another year after that and support to continue through July 27, 2013. The ASA, launched in 2006, is the product that replaces PIX.
