The National Science Foundation (NSF) has named Louisiana State University (LSU) astrophysicist and high performance computing expert Edward Seidel as its director of the Office of Cyberinfrastructure, which oversees awarding of grants to researchers. He takes on the new role Sept. 1

Seidel is Floating Point Systems Professor in the LSU Departments of Physics & Astronomy and Computer Science and directs the LSU Center for Computation & Technology. His scientific career has focused on solving lightweight issues such as Albert Einstein’s equations of general relativity and creating algorithms for simulating black hole collisions. Seidel also has served as chief scientist for the $40 million Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI).
