What can we expect to see from Cisco in the data center? Aside from the belief by investment firm UBS that Cisco could be looking to enter the blade server market, Replicate Technologies CEO Rich Miller believes Cisco this week will unveil a “fully virtualized distributed switch as part of the Nexus family.” Miller’s makes the prediction in his blog post responding to a Virtualization Review discussion about Cisco’s approach to virtualization. In that discussion, Virtualization Review Executive Editor Tom Valovic writes next-generation data center currently consists of disaparate elements, including I/O virtualization and dynamic provisioning of I/O capacity. There are also products appearing that support other types of virtulization, such as server virtualization by making the supporting network more flexible, writes Valovic, who believes that Cisco’s VFrames will be the tool that allows next-generation data centers to virtualize all elements, including servers, storage, network ad applications.
