Cisco collaboration: Where’s the identity management platform?

Analysis

Burton Group analyst Mike Gotta says a big hole in Cisco’s wide-ranging collaboration announcement Wednesday is identity management and believes that the company would need to either buy an ID

management player, expand what exists within PostPath, or partner with an ID player. Gotta also believes Cisco could plug more holes in the collaboration portfolio by acquiring one of the mashup, platform-as-a-service, or feed syndication platform vendors, or a mobile player.

Gotta was quoted in the WSJ Wednesday as saying corporate customers are puzzled as to who is Cisco, this new contender in the collaboration software space. In his blog today, Gotta has posted up some 45-plus questions about Cisco’s collaboration plans, in areas including tooling, content management, integration, social networking, and cloud computing.

If Gotta has so many questions, it strikes me that Cisco has a lot of work to do to convince customers that it has a comprehensive collaboration platform. Let’s just say Cisco and collaboration appears to be a work in progress, which begs the question: when will it catch up with Google, Microsoft?
