In my last entry on Windows search services, I mentioned that the easiest and least expensive way to get some experience with so-called “enterprise” search is by downloading and installing Search Server 2008 Express. So I decided to install that product myself. It’s a 265MB download free from microsoft.com.
When you run the installer, it gives you the opportunity to review the hardware and software requirements. This product wants to see a 2.5GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 3GB of free hard disk space at a minimum. It also wants to see .NET framework 3.0 with ASP.NET 2.0. …in which case you get the message that “The tool was unable to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Redistributable Package.” This was accompanied by various event 4375 messages in the system log from the Servicing service. I’ve seen some of these errors on this test machine before, and now it looks like I’ll have to chase them down. Stay tuned next time, when you can accompany me on the adventure of wading through the update logs, on the hunt for messages that say FATAL, FAILED, and/or TOTALLY FUBAR. (If you don’t know that last acronym, it stands for Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition, or something similar, if you get my drift.)
