The XPS Essentials Pack

In my post here, I described the new XPS document format and its place in computing going forward.

Now, Microsoft has introduced the XPS Essentials Pack for Windows Vista™, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. This release is also available in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions.

The XPS Essentials Pack allows you to begin reading and generating XPS Documents immediately. The Essentials Pack consists of two components, the XPS Viewer EP to read XPS Documents and the Microsoft XPS Document Writer to output files to the XPS Document format.

“Additionally, the XPS Essentials Pack download includes providers to enable the iPreview and iFilter capabilities found in many Windows applications. Windows shell handlers are also included to enable thumbnail views and file properties for XPS Documents.”

If you are looking for a lightweight distribution format for internally-generated documents, this is for you.
