Want to know what’s coming next to your network? Watch the world of gaming hardware. As Patrick Mannion writes in the Under the Hood blog:
“The next round of game-platform redesigns may still be four to five years out, but chip and software designers in the areas of wireless, microeletromechanical systems, displays, miniature cameras, sensors, actuators and storage have an opportunity … by converging on interactivity, connectivity and information display.”
This was the gist of a presentation from Semiconductor Insights that videotaped teardowns of gaming platforms from the past – such as a 1986 Atari – to the present Xbox 360 Elite and Ninendo Wii.
It’s not surprising that the hottest networking technology is being developed for games, which have some of the most extreme engineering requirements of any network. Fun has a way of inspiring people to be inventive.
What innovations have you seen come to your network from gaming?
