Analyzing last month’s move by Microsoft to hand over part of its Network Access Protection software to the Trusted Computing Group, Computer Business Review Online reports that this has resulted in the network access control market being Cisco vs. everyone else.
Could the reason be why Cisco has been quiet of late about its NAC product be because it’s rethinking its NAC strategy in the light of Microsoft’s donation to the TCG, asks CBR.
CBR quotes Steve Hanna, co-chair of the TNC as saying that moving Microsoft NAP into the standards space will ensure its use in non-Vista environments. And while Cisco may not formally support TNC, its equipment supports the necessary protocols for a TNC server to control them, Hanna says.
Should Cisco fully support the TNC? This debate does drive home the same old question about Cisco’s preference of proprietary standards.
