Cisco is reported to be preparing to inject another $1 billion-plus into its India facilities, according a CNBC-TV18 via Moneycontrol.com, and is calling for India ex-pats to return home to help build Cisco in that country.
In 2005, the company pledged to invest $1 billion in India over three years but, according to the story, Cisco spent it all within two years.
The enthused story reads:
Chambers are headed back in October this year and look ready to make another billion-dollar pledge or maybe even more because much has changed in the last two years. India today is Cisco’s global hub, the only hub outside of the US. The company has also announced intent to manufacture IP phones in Chennai. The man John Chambers handpicked is driving that change.
According to the story, Cisco has boosted its India headcount to 3,000 in the past six months. CNBC-TV18 quotes Wim Elfrink, who flies the Cisco flag in India, as saying:
“We are looking at a large number of well qualified Indian engineers who are settled in the US and want to come back, engineers for whom the biological clock is ticking and its time to come back, not just because their mum and dad want them back now but also because they think there is some thing happening in India that is sustainable.”
The story adds:
Elfrink hopes that 20% of Cisco’s top talent globally will be based out of India in the next three years. That would mean the company would be hiring atleast 50 vice presidents and 300 directors in India in the medium term. Cisco’s eventual strategy is to run the world for 12 hours out of us and for 12 hours out of India.
