If, for some reason, you wanted to encrypt and hide the contents of your disk drive, what would you use? I just stumbled across an open source data encryption system that looks amazing!
Called TrueCrypt the software provides a virtual volume in a file which can also contain another hidden volume. This allows for “plausible deniability” in case “an adversary forces you to reveal your password” This works because until the volume is decrypted “a TrueCrypt volume appears to consist of nothing more than random data” making it “impossible to prove that a file, a partition or a device is a TrueCrypt volume or that it has been encrypted.”
Not only is TrueCrypt open source, it is free as well and runs on Windows Vista/XP/2000 and Linux. Shame there’s no OS X but its in the plans along with an API and a GUI for Linux.
Actually a good reason for using TrueCrypt encryption is that if you travel internationally customs will sometimes ask to examine your PC’s contents. Anyone who believes in privacy will, of course, want to say no but that usually isn’t a good idea unless you like spending hours in the dingy bowels of the airport and being subjected to a cavity search.
So, install TrueCrypt and you can let ’em have their fun. When they ask you whether you are using encrytion you have plausibe deniability on your side. Isn’t it great to stick it to The Man?
