Bill Gates has announced that he will leave Microsoft in about a year (July, 2008) to focus on his philanthropic activities. His role as chief architect will be shared by Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. Ozzie has long been a news favorite, but Mundie seems to have gotten less of the spotlight even though he has been Gate’s close partner on technology for the last decade, he says. This Q&A with APC magazine shows that he tows the company line in most things. For instance, he calls the idea that the browser will become the interface for all software is a myth. He says Windows can grow in market share even bigger than it is today and he delicately discusses some of the recent controversy over the Office Open XML file format.
