The combination of a united Nortel, 3Com and Polycom would create a formidable competitor to Cisco, writes Silicon Valley strategy consultant Sramana Mitra in her blog.
She adds:
Today, the networking industry is represented as Cisco and the Seven Dwarfs. Well, if at least 3-4 of the dwarfs get together, the chances of actually being able to compete in specific markets would become higher.
A combined Nortel-3Com-Polycom would still only be one-third the size of Cisco, but would boast product offerings in most of the important sectors of the networking market, from carriers, to enterprise to SMB, believes Mitra. She mentions that there would still be product segment gaps that could be filled by “the other dwarfs,” and you’ll have to read her blog next week to find out which ones she means.
