French researchers have created a system using geostationary satellites for enabling high-speed Internet services at sea.
The effort, orchestrated via the pan-European EUREKA project , supports bandwidth between 1 and 2Mbps using parabolic antenna, modem and VSAT technologies.
The researchers claim the system, which will support videoconferencing and other applications, is more cost efficient and provides better bandwidth than the few other offerings available, such as those through INMARSAT.
Target customers include government naval organizations and marine researchers.
