California group asks for extended court oversight

The so-called California group – a group of states lead by California – have this week submitted a formal request to extend court-lead oversight of Microsoft until November 2012, reports VNUnet. California, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia are the states involved. They say Microsoft has not complied with the court-ordered review of its communication protocols that, they say, should have been documented in Microsoft’s initial implementation of these protocols in 2001. Plus, they say, delays in releasing its server product has only added to Microsoft market dominance and so continued government oversight is necessary to ensure that it doesn’t use its market position to unfairly squash competition.
