Apple’s strategy for maintaining carrier network control of iPhones is clear, given their response to iPhones unlocked from AT&T’s cellular network was to turn the phones into bricks. Now the anySIM software that can be used to unlock iPhones has been open sourced. Anyone wishing to use, modify code and contribute back can help keep the iPhone “free” to run on other carrier’s networks.
Did Apple apply some muscle on the creators of AnySIM to try and stop them from playing cat and mouse with Apple’s locking schemes? Possible but there hasn’t been any hint that is the case. Could it be there was a backlash of customers who were unhappy their iPhones became iBricks after anti-unlock code updates were distributed by Apple. Maybe they complained to anySIM creators after using the unlock software. Certainly possible.
anySIM’s stated objective of open sourcing the code is to enlist others in the effort to keep up with locking schemes for the iPhone. That’s what their page on Google explains anyway. That seems a bit contrived to me. Apple’s locking schemes for the iPhone can’t be that hard to keep up with.
I would imagine this move is to work around current of future iPhone licensing restrictions for unlocking phones, or possibly some heat anySIM got for creating the unlock software (by Apple, maybe?). How knows. It’s hard to say for sure but heavy handed tactics like bricking unlocked iPhones doesn’t fit the Apple image portrayed in the 1984 Super Bowl commercial. I’m interested to see if any more comes of this and if users continue to experience punitive actions if they continue to unlock Apple’s iPhone.
