Internet2 says it is retiring its Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) testbed, which helped researchers build dynamic circuit network services and other technologies now central to the new Internet2 nationwide network.

These technologies enable Internet2 users to test out the most extreme of network applications, according to Rick Summerhill, Internet2’s chief technology officer. They also lay the foundation for support of new testbeds for other technologies, he says.

The hybrid network testbed launched in 2004.
