Last month we posted an item here about the British government offering its citizens an opportunity to receive e-mail alerts about terrorism warnings. Buzzblog reader Ben Franske offered this answer to a question I raised in that post and I’ve taken way too long to bring it to your attention. Here ’tis:
I just finished your column about e-mail alerts for people in Britain about terror threats. In it you asked “What about here in the United States?” What you may not be aware of is that there is already one, if not more, services providing this information in the U.S. The one I’m aware of is The Emergency Email and Wireless Network, which offers free warnings for both weather events and homeland security issues in the U.S. While it’s not a government-provided service they are essentially re-broadcasting government-provided information from the National Weather Service weather alerts and the Emergency Alert System.
I can see the weather alerts, depending on where you live. And those of you who just can’t get enough terrorism hysteria on the TV news might want to check it out, too.
