HP Labs has named Prith Banerjee as its new director, replacing the retiring Dick Lampman, effective Aug. 1. Banerjee comes from the University of Illinois Chicago, where he is Dean of the College of Engineering. His research interests include distributed and parallel computing, compilers and VLSI computer-aided design, according to HP.
David Mitchell, an analyst at consultancy Ovum , had this to say about the move: “Director of HP Labs is an important role within HP, reporting to Shane Robison, executive director and chief strategy and technology officer. HP Labs are an important element of the $3.6 billion technology research and development product that HP invests in annually. Since HP Labs was established in 1966 there have only been three previous directors – it’s a long term and strategic role.”
“Prith has excellent credentials from academia but also has commercial expertise. He has the right credentials for HP Labs. Bringing in outside talent like Prith is a signal from Mark Hurd and colleagues that they will continue to build the senior team with the best talent from across the globe – laying strong foundations for the next growth phase for HP.”
