For some time now, some formerly relevant weekly glossies have been touting the open source office productivity applications as the second coming.
Are they crazy?
Businesses should trust their data, indeed their lifeblood, to some software that they know nothing about? Not to talk about file incompatibility, customer service, technical support, product improvement timelines, etc.?
When that doofus in Massachusetts first came up with the idea, it was a stunner!
A peón at a governmental agency coming up with a declaration defining and selecting a document format for data files!
And open source donkeys fell in line, proclaiming it as gospel.
In all, incompatibilities with the de facto standard, Microsoft Office, is downplayed as incidental.
What?
Are you kiddin’?
If you buy into their schpeel, all problems would be resolved in the future, since, there are legions of coders out there working on resolving issues with open source.
Is that right?
Why don’t you ask Airbus about data incompatibility?
In my AbsoluteVista.com post here, I revealed that it wasn’t a bad design, or an overreaching design that almost tanked Airbus, the company. It was data incompatibilities between versions of the same PLM software, Dassault Systemes CATIA in the same company.
Trip that: a nearly $20 billion USD loss directly attributed to data translation errors in a company with a gazillion engineers!
How many SMBs can afford to go with that?
