Autonomy, which develops content aggregation software, is adding multimedia to its arsenal with a planned acquisition of Virage, which makes tools for creating live and on-demand streaming presentations. The deal, if approved by Virage shareholders, will pay $1.10 for each share of Virage stock and $13.3 million in cash, for a total purchase price around $38.1 million. This marriage seems to make sense. Autonomy’s products are designed to manage unstructured data and multimedia falls under that category. Why not add some tools around that via a quick acquisition?
