Here’s something a I don’t get to write about very often: A new videoconferencing company. LifeSize, headed up by industry veterans Craig Malloy and Michael Kenoyer, made its debut last week. The company’s twist on the space: Their endpoints can delivery high-definition video (1280×1024) at 1M bit/sec and DVD-level video (720X480) at more typical speeds of around 512K bit/sec. Video gear today delivers video at Full CIF or 352×288 resolution. What’s the catch? Well to get the full fidelity video, you need LifeSize endpoints on both ends of the call. I’ve only had a phone briefing on the company’s technology, but hope to see it in action at the upcoing Networld+Interop show in Las Vegas. You can read more about LifeSize and its offerings here.
As someone who covers the video space, I am excited that there is a new player on the market. Tandberg and Polycom have beaten up on each other enough, now LifeSize can stir the pot in a different direction.
