Phishing: It’s giving spam a bad name

The way researchers were talking about phishing at the 4th annual MIT Spam Conference this week, it kind of makes you long for the days of unsolicited penis enlargement and Nigerian fund-raising e-mails.

Network World Editor Cara Garretson attending the event earlier this week, learning that the nature of spam is becoming ever more dangerous, with as much as a third of all spam being phishing attacks.

“The spam problem will get worse, and the reason is phishing,” said Bill Yerazunis, senior research scientist with Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories at the event.
