Alliances and demos with content providers underscore commitment to consumer video
Cisco this week made a number of announcements at the CES show in Las Vegas, including a deal with cable company Charter Communications to supply products for Charter’s “Spectrum” video service. Spectrum is a cloud-based user interface that will work on any deployed set-top box in Charter’s footprint.
The Cisco products include a cloud-based security suite, including a downloadable security solution for set-top boxes, and a digital rights management solution to support video services on a range of IP devices. Cisco will also supply “a substantial share” of Charter’s “Worldbox,” a thin client that can be updated via cloud software and incorporates a cloud-driven user interface to deliver new features to Charter subscribers.
Cisco also announced that it renewed an agreement with Belgian service provider Proximus to address growth opportunities in next-generation video delivery for consumers, smart city services for government organizations, and service orchestration for business-to-business customers.
And Cisco partnered with Kabel Deutschland (KD), Germany’s largest cable operator, to create KD‘s next-generation video service. The future video service will integrate pay TV content, on-demand, catch-up and time-shift TV with Internet video of all types, to create a video-hub for the home.
One of the technologies Cisco demonstrated at CES was a targeted advertising system for Sky, a European content provider. Sky AdSmart enables advertisers to target different ads to different households watching the same live linear TV program based on over 150 different demographic criteria, Cisco says.
