In other infrastructure news, Digum introduces new VoIP gateways
Two news items today: ADTRAN recently added Session Border Control (SBC) features in its portfolio of enterprise gateways and routers, and Digium has introduced two new VoIP gateways.
ADTRAN’s SBC software functionality has been added to its NetVanta 3430 and 6000 series, as well as Total Access 900e IP Business Gateways. The software-based features were developed to address the service providers’ need for a demarcation device to securely monitor and manage SIP trunking services, especially those targeting the small to medium enterprise (SME) markets.

Located at the customer premise to provide a demarcation point between the service provider’s VoIP network and the customer’s IP PBX, the ADTRAN SBC features will handle NAT/firewall traversal, VoIP protocol interworking, transcoding, media anchoring, and troubleshooting tools.
Commenting in a statement, Brian Riggs, Current Analysis research director for business technology and software, said, “More and more businesses are turning to SIP trunking services as the connectivity option for their IP-based communications systems. With the market for SIP trunking services set to quickly grow over the next several years, ADTRAN’s introduction of SBC functionality targeted toward the SMB and SME markets should help this market accelerate quickly.”
In another infrastructure-related announcement, Digium introduced two new Asterisk-based VoIP Gateways: the G100 and G200 combine the Asterisk open source communications engine with an embedded platform. The gateways support both TDM-to-SIP and SIP-to-TDM applications, offering the opportunity to reduce operating costs in a TDM-to-SIP deployment by connecting a legacy business phone system with dynamic SIP trunking services. SIP-to-TDM deployments can use the gateway to connect SIP-based systems with legacy T1/E1/PRI services. The single-span G100 lists for $1,195 USD while the dual-span G200 model lists for $1,995 USD.
Mark Amick, Digium’s director of product management commented in a statement, “We’ve been a leader in the telephony gateway business indirectly for the past 10 years [selling] over five million telephony ports in the form of interface cards which are frequently used to build gateways from standard PC hardware. We’re pleased to introduce another connectivity option for our customers with this new family of standalone gateways.”
