As interest in cloud computing arises out of enterprises of all sizes, IT management vendors are figuring out the best ways to capture mindset.
Over the last year or so, we’ve seen a steady stream of new and upgraded products aimed at helping enterprises keep up on application performance and IT service delivery as they mix cloud computing into their IT environments.
At ScienceLogic, the cloud management imperative has returned the company to its roots serving midsize enterprises, says CEO Dave Link. Of late, ScienceLogic has garnered attention for its EM7 G3 management product, scaled to accommodate cloud environments with up to 10,000 networked devices distributed globally.

At Interop New York on Wednesday, ScienceLogic is taking the wraps off an EM7 G3 version optimized for smaller environments. Link bills this appliance, called the EM7 G3 All-in-One, as an IT operations and cloud monitoring product “for midsized companies with enterprise-class needs.”
“This gets us back to where we started the company seven years ago, focused on solving the really challenging problems for emerging, midmarket companies in simplified ways — easy to install, get up and running and show clear value,” Link says.
Big or small, enterprise IT managers must be able to move about their IT environments, no matter the compute model, with the nimbleness enabled by a consistent operational view, Link adds. “We thought it was time to bring the most-sophisticated generation of our product back to the midmarket,” he says.
The EM7 G3 All-in-One, which is built on a 64-bit platform, is available as a virtual machine or dedicated hardware appliance for unified monitoring of networks, applications, systems, virtual servers and any other component making up IT service delivery in the data center or out in the cloud. With the appliance, IT managers can monitor physical and virtual servers and, in private cloud environments, can support multitenancy, chargeback and automation capabilities.
“With virtualization and the cloud, compute becomes a lot more liquid and things start moving around faster than a human can process those kinds of changes from a monitoring and management view. So we’ve added in a lot of automation, which is the next tier above fault and performance management,” Link says.
For example, the base product includes runbook automation features for auto-remediation and other tasks.
“We can get IT to lights-out management quicker than it can do writing scripts and doing things manually,” Link says. “This is good for midsized companies — they just don’t have that much time for all the work that’s traditionally required.”
Available as of Oct. 20, the EM7 G3 All-in-One appliance starts at $25,000. However, ScienceLogic is offering a special launch price of $19,500, including installation and training, through year’s end. As Link says, “Consider it an early Christmas present.”
