Visibility, optimization and automation in the offing
As enterprise IT organizations expand their use of virtualization, increased visibility into what’s happening across the virtualized data center becomes exceedingly important. Problems such as virtual machine sprawl, I/O bottlenecks and orphaned VMs, after all, are due as much to lack of visibility into the virtualized infrastructure as anything else.
Help is on the way, promise vendors such as Veloxum and VMTurbo.

From Veloxum, the help comes in the form of new reporting and monitoring capabilities for its virtualization performance management software. The software, called Veloxum for Enterprise, relies on the company’s Active Continuous Optimization technology for continuous tuning of the virtualization infrastructure and application settings.
With the new enhancements, optimization, monitoring and reporting capabilities get consolidated into a single package, Veloxum says. In addition, the company is providing an API for integrating the optimization technology into existing enterprise reporting packages.
Such end-to-end virtualization visibility will let users not only understand where performance issues occurred, but how the Veloxum optimization technology helped fix them, said Nick Gerasimatos, CEO for Elastic Sky, a virtualization consulting company, in a prepared statement. “The monitoring penetrates into the operating systems and provides cross-platform, holistic views of OS metrics through multiple layers of virtualization.”
From VMTurbo, the help comes with availability of its full VMTurbo Virtualization Management Suite, which comprises Monitor, Reporter, Planner and Optimizer modules.
This management appliance is unique in its ability to turn insights into actions, the company says. It does this by combining real-time operational performance metrics with analytics and driving workload management actions. These actions are aimed at maintaining virtual infrastructure operations within predefined performance constraints so that IT can guarantee service levels and maximize its return on infrastructure investments, VMTurbo says.
In addition, VMTurbo automates the decision of what workload to run where and when. The goal, the company says, is reducing operating and capital expenses.
