New module first to leverage company's deep packet analysis technology
In the old days, if you were to have asked a mixed group of server and switch sorts whether application or network performance analysis is more important, an amiable discussion would have quickly devolved into argument. But just as IT environments are becoming more fluid and dynamic, the management view is maturing as well. The two have got to be as one, with the endgame being effective service delivery management, enterprise IT professionals have begun to realize.
“If I can combine the application session analysis with the management and monitoring of network infrastructure, that’s exactly what enterprise network, data center or even cloud managers are looking for now,” says Rohit Mehra, director, Enterprise Communications Infrastructure, IDC. “They want a holistic approach to network management that lets them monitor the individual network or infrastructure elements but then also monitor the applications running on top of that.”

NetScout Systems, which last week extended its unified service delivery management platform with an integrated module that combines application and network performance management capabilities, understands that, Mehra says. “What struck a chord with me,” he says, “is how it’s evolved from basic network management, where all physical elements of the network are being managed, to managing application elements and then finally to service delivery management.”
The new nGenius Enterprise Intelligence module complements the nGenius Service Delivery Manager by providing deep-dive application performance management capabilities needed for rapid problem resolution. It’s the first module for NetScout’s nGenius Service Assurance Solution to use the Adaptive Session Intelligence (ASI) deep packet analysis technology the company introduced late last year, says Steve Shalita, vice president of marketing for the company.
nGenius Enterprise Intelligence closes the gap between application and network performance management, Shalita adds. It combines network traffic intelligence with granular hop-by-hop views into performance and latency as voice and data applications cross data centers and even the cloud. Using the ASI technology, the module automates, accelerates and simplifies the creation of a true representation of an end-to-end user data or voice session.
“From a solutions perspective, we look at all the aspects of service delivery in conjunction with networks, applications and users. Enterprise Intelligence brings all the pieces together in an overall session-oriented view,” Shalita says.
“What I like about this approach,” Mehra says, ” is how it successfully builds on the previous architecture and delivers more value as networks and infrastructure become more and more complex.”
In field trials now, nGenius Enterprise Intelligence should be generally available this July, Shalita says.
