After the unbridled success of the iTunes App Store proved that people are more than willing to download apps online, Apple thought “Why not do the same thing for the Mac?”
And in January 2011, they did just that when they launched the Mac App Store. Since then, the Mac App Store has been doing quite well, though not quite as good as Apple app store which has thus far seen over 15 billion downloads.
That notwithstanding, Apple earlier this week announced that the Mac App Store had surpassed the 100 million download milestone. That’s not too shabby for having only been out for less than a year. What’s more, the 100 million download mark doesn’t encompass downloads of OS X Lion. And further highlighting the impressive nature of Apple’s announcement, only OS X users running Snow Leopard have access to the Mac App Store. In other words, Apple was able to achieve such an impressive result without the assistance of any Mac users still running Leopard, Tiger, and if any of these users remain, Panther.
“In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry,” Phil Schiller said in Apple’s press release. “With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world.”
