OK, don’t get too excited – we finally have something other than “under construction” on our site. At least this isn’t an April Fool’s column.
As most of you know, Farpoint Group’s Web page has been perpetually under construction throughout our history. It’s not that I’ve got anything against the Web; I don’t. It’s just that I’ve become irritated with (a) Web sites that feature gratuitous animation or bizarre user interfaces that, while perhaps appropriate for businesses in artistic areas of endeavor, otherwise waste the time of visitors, (b) elaborate Web sites that make it difficult to find the information one is seeking (it’s often hard to find simple product/service descriptions and just the basic “About” info, and most Web site search functions are just plain awful), (c) Web sites that require frequent updating, although this can be useful in certain cases, and (d) Web sites that simply don’t work on mobile devices. And, I guess this is also important, Farpoint Group just isn’t the kind of business that requires a constant Web presence; we offer services (not products) to a relatively small number of clients, and they know how to reach us. We don’t do overt outbound marketing or promotion. Add the sheer volume of work around here, coupled with, well, laziness on my part, and perpetual construction (sounds better than “we’re really not working on this at all”, no?) it’s been.
And besides, it’s been fun to be known at the guy who doesn’t (make that didn’t) have a Web site, a marketing draw in and of itself given the nature of what we do. But, finally, after procrastinating for, oh, I don’t know, a decade or so, but who’s counting, I was finally convinced to produce something of a functional Web site, and it’s now online. It’s very simple – just the facts, a few pointers, and contact information, although I may add other materials from time to time. I like the one-page approach. And the design, by Adam Hubka, is attractive, simple, clean, and appealing. I hope you like it; I do, and very much.
