It's sleek, it's simple to use and, best of all, it's super-cheap
Here’s what I mean. All device manufacturers, especially Samsung and Apple, work overtime coming up with adjectives to describe how their new device will change everything about your life and will help you ascend into a state of bliss and enlightenment that can only be attained with a quad-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor, a 5-inch Super AMOLED display screen and a 48MP camera. The Focus 2 doesn’t try to blow you away with its specs but that’s just fine: It’s a sleek and light little device that is simple to use and that provides all the essentials that most normal people want from their smartphones.
Not to cast aspersion on the geekier among us, but most people don’t need their smartphone to track their eyeball movements as the new Samsung Galaxy S III does. Rather, they want a smartphone that can make calls, send and receive emails, surf the web and occasionally play Angry Birds or Cut the Rope. The Focus 2 does all these things and acts as a good starter device for smartphone newbies who don’t feel like shelling out $200 for a new iPhone.
So onto the features: The phone’s 5MP camera isn’t flashy but it’s a breeze to use as clicking pictures just requires lightly tapping anywhere on the screen once rather than holding down on a button or icon. The phone is good for people who are more comfortable with Windows than other operating systems as it provides all the familiar staples of Windows PCs, including Internet Explorer, Office and SkyDrive. And finally, the phone is very light and fits well in the palm of your hand.
The bottom line: The Focus 2 isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s refreshingly simple and for $50 you could do a whole lot worse.
