Highlighting the tremendous opportunity for growth in China, Apple this past weekend sold over 2 million iPhones in China during the first weekend of the device’s availability.
“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release this weekend. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
The iPhone launch in China this weekend was accompanied by a broader worldwide rollout encompassing over 30 additional countries. All told, the iPhone 5 is now available in over 100 countries, making it the fastest iPhone rollout to date.
What’s really tantalizing for Apple is that they managed to sell so many iPhone units in China so quickly without China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile carrier with well over 650 million subscribers. Once Apple secures a deal with them, iPhone sales will truly skyrocket.
