Long-time rivals and respected adversaries, Bill Gates talks about his last visit with Steve Jobs.
During a recent interview with 60 MInutes’ Charlie Rose, Bill Gates talked rather emotionally about his last meeting with longtime rival Steve Jobs. The pair’s last meeting occurred in Jobs’ home in May of 2011.
Gates grew emotional as he recalled visiting Jobs just before his death. The billionaire welled up as he described their last conversation, which he described as “forward-looking.” “He showed me the boat he was working on,” said Gates, “and talked about how he’s looking forward to being on it, even though we both knew there was a good chance that wouldn’t happen.”
Gates futher explained that Jobs, during the duo’s last visit, was not overcome with sadness. On the contrary, he was still focused on technology and how it could change the world.
“He was not being melancholy, like ‘Oh, I’ve been gypped,’” Gates said. “It was very forward-looking, like ‘Oh, we haven’t really improved education with technology yet — what do you think?’”
Gates said that both he and Jobs explained that large advancements in computing hadn’t yet benefited education in the same way it had law and medicine.
