This Just In: Consumer Reports Identifies That Ol’ Antenna Problem in Verizon iPhone

Apple drops the ball again? Wow! AntennaGate is apparently still with us.

Consumer Reports has just published a review of the Verizon iPhone 4 that seems to indicate that the “AntennaGate” problem has indeed returned – and this time in an entirely different engineering release of the iPhone 4. This is weird, to say the least. While CR did note that there don’t seem to be many complaints about the iPhone 4 dropping calls on Verizon (perhaps due to Verizon’s more robust network), they’re still not going to put the handset on their Recommended List.

This is another serious black eye for Apple. Bad press doesn’t always work against good marketing (hey, just ask Lindsey Lohan!), but in this case it surely does. Is Apple screwing up here? No judgment on my part at present – like I said, this is all a bit weird. More free bumpers may be in order, however, and CR reports these are indeed available on a case-by-case basis.

The iPhone regardless remains off my recommended list due to Apple’s byzantine practices WRT content and apps. Did you see they now want a hefty cut of subscription revenues? While I’ve never been a big fan of the term “corporate greed”, since corporations are in fact supposed to maximize ROI, I don’t think screwing over one’s partners in a highly-competitive environment is an effective strategy for building the good will required over the long term. And, again Apple telling someone what they can and cannot do with a product legitimately purchased in the open market is simply unacceptable from my point of view.

That being said, things have not been entirely rosy with my own personal Android phone, however – more later on that.
