Deep Packet Inspection and WAN Optimization
Background: Need for combining WAN optimization techniques with bandwidth management. I am personally quite convinced that WAN optimization functionality alone cannot solve the problem of congested WAN link! • Several companies are offering solutions for optimization of WAN link by minimization of the amount of the traffic sent over. Techniques like TCP optimization/compressions, file cashing etc. may significantly reduce the required bandwidth. Usually such processing is applied to business-critical applications to ensure a better user experience. • The problem is that the spared bandwidth may not stay unused and be consumed by the bandwidth hog applications which are not business-critical or even unnecessary thus the WAN link will remain congested. • Believe that WAN optimization policy should be applied along with bandwidth management applications differentiating by importance based on business logic. Question: Do you guys share the same view and approach on the need of combination of WAN optimization with bandwidth control and policing? All input is welcome! [I’m going to be posting some ideas/threads on the above topic, please provide your input via comments]
