Bought 50 companies between 2000 and 2009
Cisco outbought IBM, Oracle, Microsoft and EMC in the past decade, according to data compiled by Dow Jones VentureSource and summarized here by colleague Jon Brodkin. Cisco bought close to 50 venture funded start-ups between 2000 and 2009, compared to 35 for IBM, 30 for Microsoft, 25 for EMC and 23 for Oracle.
The list only includes venture-backed companies though, Brodkin reports. It does not include multibillion dollar deals for established companies like Scientific-Atlanta or WebEx.
Cisco’s biggest acquisition of a privately-funded company in the 2000s was IronPort. Cisco paid $830 million for the e-mail security vendor in 2007.
Other notable purchases in the decade included Google’s $1.65 billion purchase of YouTube; Microsoft’s $800 million acquisition of Internet phone service company Tellme Networks; EMC’s $625 million purchase of VMware; HP’s $360 million deal for LeftHand Networks; and IBM’s $225 million deal for database security vendor Guardium.
