It is almost upon us – a New Year! It is a new year fraught with much turmoil throughout the world and within the IT field. There are certain to be many changes this year in the IT arena – with the economy in disarray and with many businesses either going under or cutting costs dramatically, there are certain to be ramifications for us. All we can do is better position ourselves to react to a rapidly changing IT world. I am going to make this a multi-part post on some thoughts for the New Year and my own plans to weather the economics maelstrom that is upon us.
And here is yet another part to your New Years IT resolution. In my last blog I said you needed to enhance your skill set – that is applicable in this case and in general. Don’t rest on your laurels. Now you must expand your skill set as well as looking at what may be an emerging technology and jump at the chance to become an early SME (Subject matter expert). Since my crystal ball is in the shop for its 40,000 viewing update – I will only be able to guess here. I would say that anything with Virtualization will be in big demand. This as well as VoIP will be in big demand next year. IT budgets are going to be smaller and IT departments will be under pressure to come up with ways to provide the current level of support with 20% or more less staff and budgets dramatically lower.
So, expand your current skill set as well as trying to see what is going to be a hot field next year to help secure your current position. While these are good suggestions, you might have to come up some additional ideas
