Economic meltdown got you scared? The Internet can save us all. Well, actually, not the Internet per se, but if you could be so kind as to continue spending big bucks on “next-generation” Internet technologies, then John Chambers says we will all be wealthy in no time again.
That self-centered view is the gist of the Cisco leader’s advice on the cure for what ails the economy according to an article posted in The Peninsula, which bills itself as Qatar’s leading English Daily. (Howsa that? What’s good for Cisco must be good for us all?) While it is true that technology does have its advantages (whether economies are strong or soft), we wonder why the guy that leads the network industry’s bellwether company can’t have a bigger, more global view? The banks are in crises. A router ought to fix it. Strangled consumer confidence is sending us veering into a great depression? A new corporate VPN ought to cheer them up!
Here’s a portion of the the interview that was conducted by The Peninsula with Chambers via e-mail.
“Just before the global economic crisis, we were entering the next wave of innovation and productivity growth fueled by the Internet,” Chambers said. He advised leaders around the globe that they should continue to invest in the future of which the implications are transformational ‘so that we will have a more secure world, with strong economies, job growth, education and healthcare, as well as the ability to deliver on new energy efficient technologies that will allow our global community to thrive. … Now is the time to prepare for the upturn, to take the bold steps necessary to enable a new economy built on innovation, collaboration, operational experience and sustainability,’” Chambers said.”
So there you have it. Forget about a giant economic stimulous package. Buy a router (preferably the ASR 9000), save the world.
