Mike Volpi once considered heir to Cisco throne

Former Cisco exec Mike Volpi, once considered a candidate to succeed CEO John Chambers, is out himself as a CEO. Volpi’s been kicked upstairs to the chairmanship of Joost, the Web TV company that pulled the plug on its service this week.

His replacement as Joost CEO is Matt Zelesko, senior vice president of engineering. Joost itself will now concentrate on selling its technology to other media providers instead of offering an advertiser-supported online video service itself.

Volpi had high expectations for Joost when he jumped there from Cisco two years ago. But the economy and competition ruled Joost out of the ad sponsored Web TV game.
