Waterford Technologies MailMeter is an enterprise-class system built to work with multiple high-volume mail servers, high-performance archive volumes and SQL server. The installation is fairly complex, with a number of prerequisites (including SQL server, IIS, .Net 1.1 and 2.0, CDO components and MDAC) to be installed before MailMeter itself gets laid on top. MailMeter installed smoothly, and with all its corresponding modules installed, provides a full range of functionality comparable to the other enterprise-class products tested.
The basic MailMeter Archive product is the framework that the rest of the modules are installed into. Each of the modules can be purchased separately – together they add up to the same kind of functionality as the other full-featured products tested. Each module addresses one of the four areas mentioned in the introduction: mailbox management, e-discovery, compliance and policy enforcement. The modules are comparable to the other products, differing only in that they can be purchased a la carte – if you only need e-discover, you don’t have to pay for the rest.
Storage Manager provides mailbox management by stubbing archived messages and providing single-instance storage of messages, providing functionality equal to the other top five products.
Investigate is the search tool, providing sophisticated search criteria and high-speed searches of large mail stores, with sub-second times even with the large store.
Compliance Review offers specialized tools for regulatory or policy enforcement, allowing the creation of policies for retention of e-mails similar to the other top five.
Insight is a reporting tool that tracks e-mail usage and can find patterns or look for specific things such as attachments containing proscribed files.
When all the modules are taken together, MailMeter can provide a complete archiving solution with the added benefit of a la carte purchase of only those modules that are needed.
